A waterproofing system is required in a structure because a structure is not water tight on its own. It is made up of certain materials that absorb water or are not resistant to it. Water seepage might have serious implications on a structure’s standing capability and life. Water can cause very serious damaging effects. It causes dampness, leakages, spoils paints, rusts products of iron etc. Conventional system of structural waterproofing involves use of membranes. The membranes are layered e.g. materials like bitumen, silicate, PVC, EPDM etc. They act as a barrier between water and the structure and prevent the seepage of water. However, this system is not foolproof and poses difficulties later.
Today, advanced structural waterproofing techniques are used to resolve a wide range of problems like waterproofing damp basements, underground vaults, cellars, tunnels, protecting parking decks, water treatment plants and swimming pools and tubs. Wider applications include waterproofing underground transport systems, highway structures, Reservoirs, Water towers and Sewage treatment works.
The major category of products that are required are Cement & Concrete Water proofers, Concrete & Mortar Admixtures, Protective Coatings, Membranes & Impregnation, Grouts & Grouting Additives, Flooring stile Adhesives, Repairing Compounds, and Cement Aids. There has been an advancement of waterproofing technologies. For reliable structural waterproofing, innovative technologies and products are utilized to provide reliable waterproofing solutions for all applications. Today, people install billions of square feet of membranes worldwide. There is a requirement of high quality membranes and drainage composites for reliable waterproofing systems to protect structures from water damages everywhere.
These products have a very high market demand. As many structures crop up everywhere around the world, there is a need to keep them safe and sound. These new structures need to comply with certain norms too. So they must be built properly with high quality material along with a good waterproofing system. Structural waterproofing is a very important profession too. It involves highly skilled and efficient workers. Extreme care should be taken in appointing a professional to do this job. Problems arising due to complexities in waterproofing a structure can cause serious troubles. It demands 100% accuracy. Even 99% accuracy can’t be accepted. In this field, people apply products without the prior knowledge and experience. Moreover, untrained laborers, who have only a little knowledge and skills, are called for which results in failure of waterproofing systems most of the times.
