With the start of the 2009-2010 school year came another new law. The use of cell phones while driving through a school zone is now prohibited, and if caught, could cost you up to $200.00 in fines.
I do understand the importance of safe driving and paying attention to the roads, especially in a school zone where some of the children’s height is not above the bumper of your car, and for this reason, I completely agree with this law. My question is for those individuals who choose to outfit their vehicles with hands free car kits, or speaker phones that allow us to keep both hands on the wheel. For those of us that have gone through the added expense of ensuring the safety of those around us, should we also be subjected to this new law? From what I understand, cell phone records will be pulled, and if it is noted that you were in fact, speaking on the phone while driving through a school zone during school safety zone hours, you will be ticketed. How then would you prove that you utilized your Bluetooth device to ensure the safety of those around you? Would that not be the same as holding a conversation with a person sitting in the passenger seat of your vehicle? And how many times do you turn to look at the person you are speaking to while you are driving down the street? We all should do our part to ensure the safety of our school children. I just think that this is one law that is going to be quite difficult to prove.
As the future production of vehicles is manufactured, you will begin to see the importance of built-in handsfree car kit and Bluetooth interface devices.
