If you are one of the millions of people who are missing out on routine dental care because of your anxiety about going to the dentist, then sedation dentistry might be the solution. Sedation dentistry is truly for anyone who has a fear of the dentist, or a dental phobia. With this type of dentistry your dental procedures are performed after you have been given a sedative to calm and soothe you.

You will still receive a local anesthetic, of course, as usual. But you will also receive a safe, relaxing medication that will eliminate the anxiety or downright terror experienced by many people in the dentist’s chair.

Conscious sedation dentistry means that you might be given one small pill that will induce a sort of amnesia state in which you don’t remember much of the visit to the dentist, so there is little or no lingering feeling of fear or anxiety following the dental procedure. Alternatively, you might be given another method of sedation. You remain in control, and can be brought out of conscious sedation quickly and easily if need be. Depending on the level of your fear and anxiety, there are various medications that can be used for sedation dentistry.

Many dentists use one of three different methods of sedation:
- Oral: Medications of various strengths are given to you about half an hour before your dental work is to be done. The exact medication you are given is dependent on the severity of your fear and anxiety.
- Intravenous: You will receive a drug through an IV, into your veins.
- Laughing gas: Nitrous oxide, it will induce relaxation in mild cases of anxiety.

Dental treatments such as implants, dentures, extractions, root canals or any procedure that will produce anxiety and discomfort are perfect situations for sedation dentistry.

Don’t let fear and anxiety prevent you from getting the dental care you need to maintain healthy teeth and a beautiful smile. Ask your dentist about sedation dentistry, and start getting those dental treatments the easy way.
