Liposuction is a great way to get rid of excess fat deposits. Each person stores their fat differently on the body; these fat deposits can be difficult to get rid of even with diet and exercise. Still, it is important to have realistic expectations when one is considering liposuction. Here are some common questions about liposuction to consider.

Who should undergo liposuction?
Liposuction is best for patients who are near a healthy weight but still have some areas of fat. Excessively obese patients or those with serious medical conditions are not typically good candidates for liposuction.

How much fat is removed during liposuction?
The amount of fat depends on your goals. However, it is important to understand that liposuction is not the fast track to weight loss. It should not be regarded as an alternative to diet and exercise. Plus, the more fat to be removed, the more time the procedure will take, and the more it will cost. Liposuction is more effective for removing stubborn areas of fat than for allover weight loss. It is dangerous to remove more than 8 or 10 pounds of fat by liposuction in a single treatment.

How much does liposuction cost?
Again, this depends on the amount of fat to be removed. It is usually in the neighborhood of $3,000 to $4,000. Procedures utilizing lasers or ultrasonic waves to break up the fat typically cost more than traditional liposuction. Because liposuction is an elective procedure, it is not covered by insurance, and costs can vary widely.

Can liposuction remove cellulite?
Cellulite is actually fat located just under the skin, making its rippled appearance more apparent. Liposuction is effective at removing some of this cellulite, but it is difficult to eliminate all of the fat under the skin.

Will the fat come back?
If the patient gains weight after the procedure, the weight gain will be distributed among all body areas. The treated areas do have a possibility of regaining some of this fat, but because some of the fat cells have been removed, this capacity is diminished.

What is the recovery period like after liposuction?
Afterwards, most patients describe the feeling as that of a large bruise. It may be uncomfortable, especially if larger or multiple areas have been treated. Most patients can return to work within a few weeks; a compression bandage or elastic device should be worn over the treated area for approximately a month following treatment. The scars from liposuction are very small and usually located in inconspicuous areas.

What are the risks of liposuction?
Dimpling and indentations in the skin because of irregular fat removal are a known risk of liposuction, but this risk is low with skilled plastic surgeons.
