A youthful appearance not only keeps us looking and acting young, but provides for our self-esteem--and that’s exactly why many people of both sexes opt for a facelift. Cosmetic surgery has gained ground exponentially since Joan Rivers and Kenny Rogers came out of the operating room looking like porcelain dolls. In defense of Joan Rivers, she looks pretty darned good for a woman her age. Therein lays the key: retaining a youthful appearance while you age.

First and foremost, it is highly important that you discuss exacting, specific goals with your chosen physician so you hold no unreal expectations of the final results. Candid communication is essential in any relationship, especially when the relationship is with your cosmetic surgeon. Allowing a skilled physician to perform a rhytidectomy, or facelift, is an important decision.

Now that you have chosen the physician and had your first face-to-face meeting, the second thing you want to do is check him out to make sure he’s board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or in Canada, by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Stringent requirements must be both met and maintained to stay in good standing with either organization.

Time to Act
So your board certified cosmetic surgeon is qualified, experienced, and has hospital privileges. Now you’re ready to decide on the type of facelift that will accomplish your specific goals. Rhytidectomies come in many forms, from deep plane lifts to what is known as a feather lift: Almost any variation and extent of surgery is available to meet the needs of your specific, tailored, facial improvement goals. There are also the ever-increasingly popular “Lunchtime Lifts”, which allow for great results and a very short recuperation time.

If cost is a consideration, never fear--it’s really not that expensive. The price range actually depends upon your locale. The average price for a “quickie lift” can run around $4000. Of course the more extensive and involved your choices, the higher the prices will range. Some can run upwards of $25,000 for a brand new facial you.

After your surgery, it’s quite normal to have facial swelling, bruising, and puffiness lasting close to two weeks. You will look worse than you feel. Most people visit their plastic surgeon within a few days of their surgery. At this appointment, your doctor will remove your drainage tubes (if needed) and will check under your bandages.

Five to seven days after your facelift, most of your stitches will be removed. Stitches or clips along your hairline may be removed at the same time, or they may be left on for a few days longer.
