The High Times Cannabis Cup has become the highlight of the year for marijuana enthusiasts throughout the world. Held once a year in Amsterdam the Cannabis Cup sees hundreds of people descend on the city to find out all about the latest advances in cannabis seeds genetics as well as well as seeing which cannabis seeds will be honoured for yielding the best marijuana in the world.

The Cannabis Cup was originally set up in 1987 by the Steven Hager, editor of the world renowned “High Times” magazine, and was known as the Cannabis Cornelius Cup. Alongside the competition that lends its name to the event the Cannabis Cup is actually a full festival with musical performers, speakers, seminars. In Amsterdam, unlike most of the world, cannabis use is covered by a tolerance policy on soft drugs which essentially allows people to grow and use reasonable amounts of the drug without the threat of prosecution. This has resulted in Amsterdam (and the Netherlands in general) becoming the centre of the cannabis industry and the majority of the competitors have been bred and grown locally, making it the perfect place to host the cup.

Although the music and festivities from a major part of the event the centrepiece is undoubtedly the Cannabis Cup itself. Judging of the Cannabis Cup is open with anyone wishing to be involved permitted to register and vote on their favourite strains of marijuana. Last years Cannabis Cup had just over 2,300 judges, the greatest number since the Cup launched in 1987 and a figure that the organisers are hoping to surpass this November when the 2009 Cannabis Cup will take place. Although judging is open to anyone it is highly recommended that those choosing to judge are very familiar with, and have a high tolerance of, cannabis. Due to the legal situation in the Netherlands many of the Cannabis Seeds Banks have bred extremely potent forms of the drug; some ‘hash’ forms of the drug can be as much as 75% THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol, the active chemical in Cannabis that is responsible for it’s psychoactive effects) rather than the 6-10% that is commonly found in cannabis.

The 22nd High Times Cannabis Cup is scheduled to take place from the 22nd to the 26th of November 2009 and looks set to be one of the biggest events yet.
