“Scullcap Herb” refers to a genus of plants that grow primarily in the world's temperate zones. The variety of skullcap herb that is used in herbal medicine is scutellaria lateriflora (so-called because the leaves grow out from the stems in a “lateral,” or sideways fashion); this species is commonly found in the eastern woodlands region of the U.S., and thrives in damp, shady environments, and is the variety from which skullcap extract and therapeutic skullcap leaf is obtained. Scullcap herb is a perennial plant that blooms primarily in the mid-to-late summer.

This particular species is also known as hoodwort, blue skullcap, Virginia skullcap and mad-dog skullcap. Scullcap herb is used primarily as a mild sedative and sleep aid; in this respect, its properties are similar to those of valerian root. It should however not be confused with other species of skullcap, which are all used differently.

For those who are herbalists and/or have an interest in herbal medicine, skullcap bulk purchases are one way to make certain you have a good supply laid in for those time during which a mild sedative is called for. Skullcap extract may be taken directly before bedtime; alternatively, dried skullcap leaf can be brewed up in a tea or infusion.

In addition to its sedative uses, skullcap herb can also be used as an analgesic, or pain reliever. Skullcap extract contains compounds that may also be useful for male body builders; chrysin is thought to prevent androgen (the male hormone) from turning into estrogen (a hormone found primarily in women). Another compound, baicalin, is known to have anti-inflammatory characteristics similar to willow bark (from which common aspirin is made).

Herbalists and practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) often purchase skullcap bulk supplies, as this is a more cost-effective way to buy this useful herb. Although there are many ways to buy skullcap, bulk purchases are cheaper, and involve less packaging.

Although scullcap herb is relatively harmless, like any herb, it should be used with caution. “Natural” herbs contain the same compounds as many prescription drugs (the main difference lies in the concentration), and improperly used can result in similar side effects. Scullcap herb should be used only under the guidance of a licensed herbalist or naturopath.
