Holidaying in Phuket was an exhilarating experience. Good sights, good hotels, and the best deal: good food at dirt cheap prices.

My husband and I expected these establishments that offer cheap food to skimp on quality to offset the price. But much to our surprise, the pad thais and the seafood curry were excellent, and the ingredients were as fresh as you can get. The advertising articles that we read before we flew to Phuket about food were, in all honesty, accurate – another pleasant surprise.

You might be wondering how these establishments make money? Well, they are probably making money on the drinks, which, by the way, are a bit pricey. A bottle of Heineken or San Miguel Light is about 70 Baht. The prices of these beers are a bit stiff and judging from the number of empty bottles on every table, my guess is they are making a killing.

This phenomenon is not exclusive to Phuket. I have read about this strategy in a number of advertising blogs. Inexpensive food, but the drinks like soft drinks, spirits, wines, and beers are not cheap. You know that they are making money because of the number of drinks being ordered. I guess you cannot be at a beach front without a glass of daiquiri or ice cold beer. Well, it goes with the place, you would agree.

The lesson here is that if your offer continues to be of exceptional value, not tainted or reduced in quality to accommodate the cheaper prices, then you will maintain your status and keep your customers.

Now - can your company use this strategy? Let us admit that not all businesses are in a position to accommodate this particular tactic. But we can all be aware that offering a few good quality products at low prices can act as a lost-leader towards gaining more in up-selling or by increasing the prices of the other products.

There is a saying that goes: 'When in Rome, do what the Romans do.' In the same manner that when in Thailand: 'Eat like the Thais do; but don’t drink like them because the prices are different for you.' This is essentially the main lesson of this article. You have to offer quality products at a very low price to attract customers. But once they are in your establishment, you can offer other things that are pricey. This is the way to earn profits. This is the way to ensure that your business will continue to run for a very long time.
