Papillons are not only great companion dogs, they are also excellent watch dogs. Apart from their remarkably attractive butterfly appearance, these attributes are some reasons why many people would want to have this breed as pet. But even if they are described as such, some people, especially first time dog owners usually have a hundred and one questions regarding papillon training.

- What is small dog syndrome?
- A small dog syndrome is behavior induced by humans in which the dog believes he is the leader of the pack. Because they are small, they are often over protected and are allowed to do things that are not allowed to large dogs.

- What are the effects of small dog syndrome?
- Small dog syndrome causes various behavior issues such as jumping, growling, aggression, separation anxiety, guarding, snapping and even biting.

- What are the ways to solve this problem?
- Treat your papillon the way you would treat other dogs. Do not allow him to jump on human, to be on furniture, to growl and so on. Most of all, it is important that he understands that you are the leader of the pack. Set rules and give them limitations on what they are allowed and not allowed to do.

- What training method works best for this breed?
- The use of positive reinforcements works best for papillons. Rewarding them with food treats, favorite toys or praising them for a job well done can motivate a papillon to obey commands. Correction-based method can also be used but it is important to correct them while in the act of making a mistake. If you see your pet peeing inside the house, make a noise loud enough to distract him. Let him finish at the designated spot and reward him if he does. Avoid physical punishment as much as possible for this method may cause behavior problems.

- Is it possible to train them to compete in dog agility?
- This breed has remarkable athletic ability. Many of them excel in obstacle course with tunnels, jumps, A-frames and narrow bridges. Apart from being intelligent, papillons are considered naturally agile thus beating other larger dogs.

- How much exercise they need?
- Considering their energy and active minds, papillons need to be physically and mentally stimulated. Consistent and monitored exercise can help them stay healthy both physically and mentally.

Papillon training is not the easiest thing in the world but with knowledge on effective training methods and application of those methods, you will surely reap the fruits of your labor - a nicely trained papillon.
