Why has online dating grown by leaps and bounds while many other industries have loss money? The answer is not because the new technologies of the current digital age have made it possible or even that certain attitudes that existed previously have changed.

Those things don't hurt of course but what has really caused such tremendous growth comes down to something more basic. Match.com CEO Thomas Enraght-Moony nails it when he tells Matthew Kirdahy of Forbes Magazine, "People want to be in relationships. It's what people do." And online dating has been the main beneficiary of that basic fact.

Besides the nearly unlimited number of would be suitors and the ability to meet them from the convenience of your computer keyboard, there is one tool that online dating offers which is quite powerful but at the same time can be easily misused. It is the ability to remain anonymous.

The staggering amount of people you can meet online is both and advantage and disadvantage. More people to choose from means you have to spend more time looking thru their profiles. That can be a daunting task as well as checking out everyone who sees your profile and contacts you.

The good thing about remaining anonymous is you can essentially remain in the background. This frees you up to check out other member profiles without them seeing yours. If you see someone you think you may want to connect with then you can decide to share some of your personal information.

The drawback is since you have nothing listed on your profile other members will be less likely to check you out. That's understandable. If someone had nothing on their profile you would probably not bother with them either.

But anonymous is not determined by how much information you put on your dating profile. Someone can fill it out completely with the most intimate and minute details about themselves and still remain completely unknown.

Why? Because that is the nature of the internet. You have to trust the person on the other side of the monitor is who they say they are. Not surprisingly they are hoping the same thing when it comes to you. All the two of you have to go on is the words in the profile and the conversations you share in the chat room. Many online dating services and members have gotten pretty good at the screening process but there are no one hundred percent guarantees. The best advice would be that if you have doubts about someone then end all communication. Better safe than sorry.

Being anonymous comes with the territory when it comes to the internet in general and online dating specifically. If you are going to use it do so judiciously. It's good tool than can save you a lot of time but do not let anyone you are may be interested in have to guess about the real you.
