In recent years there has been a rising trend in green or eco-friendly weddings. It seems that concern for the environment is hitting the wedding industry too & soon-to-be brides are taking a greener approach to their wedding planning. So if you are looking to incorporate some eco-friendly elements into your wedding here are a few ideas on the hottest green wedding trends for 2009.
Reduce - Whilst it may have more to do with the economy & smaller budgets, many couples are scaling back their weddings & opting for smaller affairs instead of grand formal weddings. A smaller wedding is kinder to the environment as it means fewer resources are used on the day.
Reuse & Recycle - Remember the saying ’something old, something new…..?’ Well it seems many couples are adopting a ’something borrowed’ approach & are asking close friends & family who have recently got married, if they can borrow items used at their weddings instead of buying up new. These elements may include decorations, accessories, cake stands, table linens etc. They are also looking for cheaper alternatives from dollar stores & consignment shops rather than buying more expensive items from main stream retail outlets. Brides are becoming more creative with items such as invitations, wedding favors & centerpieces & are opting to make their own rather than buy ready made. This way they can re-use much of the materials used for other things. There is also the added benefit of saving money!
Home Weddings - As the trend for smaller weddings begins to gain popularity, so does home weddings. A home wedding allows couples to host their wedding reception at their home (or parent’s home) or in their garden. Apart from the cost saving of not having to hire a venue, a home wedding creates an elegant location with less waste.
Marrying Off the Grid - Weddings require a lot of energy. By this I mean to power the lights, entertainment, catering etc. Green minded couples are now looking for venues that have their own power supply rather than being powered from the national grid. There are a number of centers available for hire that are powered by solar, wind or thermal energy sources & these venues are growing in popularity as locations for wedding ceremonies & receptions.
Locally Made Gift Registries - Create the ultimate gift registry by only adding items which are made locally to you. It is a great opportunity to support local artisans & cuts down on the amount of energy & resources used to ship goods over from China!
Local Everything - When it comes to sustainability then everything has to be locally sourced. Many couples are now looking to buy all their wedding needs from local suppliers rather than have things shipped in from national or international locations. Such items include locally grown seasonal flowers, organic produce, local crafts & locally hired tradesman.
Decorating with Nature - An eco-themed wedding is like bringing nature in to the room with you! Table centers & floral decorations can be created with minimal fuss from branches & wild or garden flowers. Other decorations include pebbles, seashells & even leaves. Creative couples are finding many ways to create a natural green wedding with free items that they can find in their own back yard.
