This is a difficult time to sell a home in many parts of the country, so many homeowners are deciding to hold onto their properties until the market rebounds. In the meantime, some will begin remodeling in order to increase their property value, and to make their home a more comfortable living space. Unfortunately, home repairs can be costly, so a large number of homeowners will attempt the work themselves, with only the advice of hardware store employees and home repair shows to guide them.

While magazines and television shows can inspire creative expression and enthusiasm, there is only so much information that can be taught in such a limited space. There is endless information that can be missed, including the basics of home construction and working with electricity. Knowledge comes best from hands-on learning under the safe tutelage of a professional teacher or mentor. Proper home improvement skills aren't something that can be picked up over a half hour show on bathroom remodeling.

Even a task as innocuous as painting can be costly if a homeowner doesn't know what he or she is doing. By improperly preparing the painting surface, the whole job may be botched, and require a professional to come and smooth out the wrinkles.

Imagine the consequences of working with electricity. Attempting to rewire your home without adequate training is a very bad idea, and can easily lead to a minor shock or death from electrocution.

Using power tools looks easy on TV, but in reality, they are the source of hundreds of household accidents each year. Power saws of course can chop through much more than wood, and nail guns in particular have been the cause of numerous accidents. People have been known to fall on their nail guns, or accidentally pull the trigger. The nails pierce through muscle and bone, and can be very deadly. Even professional handymen need to be careful by wearing protective equipment, and using the tools properly. They, fortunately, have been trained to use power tools in a safe way, whereas the average homeowner simply pulls the tool out of the box and starts using it.

In addition to risking one's appendages, home repairs can also cause damage to lungs if a person not wearing a mask and gloves handles asbestos or toxic mold. Any work involving fumes or spores needs to be done with great caution and expertise. If you suspect there might be asbestos or a mold problem in your home, get it checked out by a pro before plowing ahead on your own.

Plumbing and heating fixtures are also dangerous in the wrong hands. Scanning the web for DIY disasters will lead you to a slew of stories and photos of people's makeshift repairs (many involving duct tape). In many cases, evidence of previous flooding or fire is left behind, yet the shoddy fix is still in place. Roof repairs are also another common site for accidents, with people falling off or through the roof.

Hire someone who knows what they're doing. They will handle the permits, repairs, and inspections. They can also help you plan your entire renovation in a way that takes into account the structural needs of the building as well as safety codes.

Spending money on a pro in the beginning can be much cheaper than having to pay for repairs later. It's also much safer for you and your family, who won't be put at risk by your botched home improvement attempts.
