Our appearance is important. No matter what we say to the contrary, people will form an opinion of us based on our appearance. Part of that appearance is our smile and no one wants to flash a big smile of yellow teeth. Rest easy, there are dental treatments for yellow teeth. Some require the dentist and some can be done at home.

Let’s start with the easy solutions. Some yellowing may be caused by how we care for our teeth. Simple dental hygiene like brushing and flossing is important. You also need to brush after beverages like coffee and soda that can stain your teeth. Other easy solutions are using one of the many whitening toothpastes or rinses available over the counter. Whitening toothpastes work by using a mild abrasive to remove stains on the outside of your teeth. These can be too harsh for sensitive teeth.

Some yellowing is not so easy to fix. As we age, the outer covering of the tooth thins and allows the yellowish interior of the tooth to show through. Stains become more deeply set. Dental veneers can be placed on the fronts of your teeth to give your smile a whiter appearance. These can also take care of minor shape corrections.

Teeth whitening can be done in the dentist’s office. In fact, it can be more effective because a stronger concentration of whitener can be used. It can cause tooth sensitivity for a while but it usually goes away after a few days. Re-mineralize your teeth with a high fluoride containing product. It will take a couple of weeks for the procedure to have its full effect and should be maintained at home.

Whitening is not permanent. Depending on how well you avoid beverages and foods that stain teeth, you may see it begin to fade after a month or longer. Another caution that must be added is to not have unrealistic expectation. There are so many variables to what a whitening treatment will do with your teeth. Don’t expect to have movie star teeth after one treatment.

The best dental treatment for yellow teeth is an in-office whitening treatment supervised by a dentist. It’s the fastest and most dramatic whitening experience. In a few days following the treatment you’ll be smiling just to show off your pearly whites. Your smile will be the part of your appearance that helps make a great impression on others.
