Spider veins are the veins in your body that appear on the surface of the skin and cause a cosmetically unpleasing effect to appear. Generally they are caused by the collection of blood in weaker arteries, enlarging them so that they appear on the surface of the skin. Veins can appear slightly off color, red or even purple. This is a common problem both men and women in the US, however it has been notices that women are more likely to develop them.
Varicose veins are generally veins, most commonly in the legs, that have become enlarged and painful due the backward flow, and collection of the blood in the weakened veins in the legs (from the affects of high pressure while standing or running).
Telangiectasias are small dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin. These are visible on the skin surface as mentioned above and measure up to 1 millimeter in diameter. Commonly seen on the face, they also develop on the legs, specifically on the upper thigh, knee joint and ankles.
Causes
Age: Spider veins may develop and appear on the skin at any age, but usually first appear around 18 and 35 years of age.
Pregnancy: This is also a major factor in the development of this problem, the reason being the larger quantity or certain circulating hormones that weaken vein walls as well as increased blood flow and the pressure on the abdominal wall during pregnancy, which tends to distend veins, causing blood to pool in the veins. Sometimes, varicose veins may spontaneously improve or even disappear a few months after delivery; however, in most cases they leave marks on the skin due to the condition of the blood vessels.
Lack of physical activity: Prolonged sitting or standing in their daily activities have an increased risk of developing varicose veins.
Removal and reduction
Non surgical ways; these are 'sclerotherapy', the use of elastic stockings and the elevation of the legs (to affect blood flow away from the legs), and regular exercise. Light therapy using pulsed light, laser and blue light is also an alternative procedure which provides very effective in clearing up these problems
Simple surgery; Vein stripping to remove the affected veins is performed
Using blue light treatment
.Laser or intense blue light therapy / pulsed light therapy (such as pulsed blue light therapy) works best with spider veins, causing them to reduce and disappear from view within a few weeks of treatment. Intensity of the light used and the extent and schedule for treatment depend upon the severity of the problem, however, the variations of this therapy are all safe (FDA approved and UV free), painless and effective, with no down-time or lasting side effect. The treatment sessions are conducted weakly (or a few days a week) for 40 minute exposures to the affected parts of the body and are seen to cause the veins to shrink gradually and painlessly
