Teeth whitening is the most commonly performed cosmetic dentistry procedure. After all, no matter who we are, our smiles begin to fade as we age. It is natural for our teeth to looker duller and more yellow as we get older simply because the enamel wears away. Some people have discolored teeth from taking medication, particularly certain antibiotics, frequently during their childhood. However, many people smoke cigarettes and even more people drink tea and coffee. With these things happening, our teeth don’t stand a chance.

Professional teeth whitening is usually accomplished by bleaching the teeth. While there are home kits available, it is best to start out by talking with your dentist about this. The main reason is that not all teeth respond to bleaching. It depends of how bad the discoloration is and what caused it in the first place and your dentist is the one to tell you that. There is no point in spending the money to have your teeth whitened only to find that it won’t work.

Your dentist will recommend a bleaching method depending on the number of teeth to be bleached and the severity of the discoloration. There are three options, including putting the bleach on the stained teeth and using heat and light to start the bleaching process, using a special mouth guard with bleaching gel, or using a special toothpaste that contains the bleach. These methods have all been tested and deemed safe.

Ultimately, you can have the bleaching done in the dentist office or at home, but always do it under the care of a dentist. You want to be sure everything is going as it should. And remember that teeth whitening does not replace regular dental care that ensures healthy teeth. That whiter, brighter smile is close at hand and cosmetic dentistry is the way to get that smile.
