In our school district, the children participate in a Stock Market unit in fifth grade. First they choose a stock to “buy” with their set amount of money, and then they follow that stock’s ups and downs over the course of the 6-week unit of study. Inevitably, the concept is confusing to these 10- and 11-year-olds. They have trouble understanding precisely how a stock can have a value, much less the factors that influence an increase or decrease in that value.
Come to think of it, a number of adults have an imperfect understanding of stocks as well. This might cause them to invest more than they can afford, or to have unrealistic expectations regarding the profit they can expect. Sometimes articles in the newspaper will refer to a business executive’s value “on paper.” These executives often have tremendous fluctuations in their fortunes as a company’s stock values rise and fall. However, until that value is transformed into purchases or long-term security, it seems rather nebulous.
Those who think in more concrete terms might want to consider a different investment tool: oil and gas royalty investments. Unlike stocks, royalty investments involve purchasing real property. Your investment is backed by mineral interests, not just a company’s value on paper. People all around the country, representing every profession, own land and lease out the mineral rights to that land. When an oil or gas company utilizes those mineral resources, the owner enjoys a steady stream of royalty income while maintaining ownership of the land itself.
It is not that difficult to find someone to sell royalties, but these types of royalty investments are largely unexplored by the general public. For many of us, researching and understanding the concept of solid land ownership is simpler than comprehending and predicting the ups and downs of the stock market. And those who do have a solid understanding of the stock market realize that diversifying is an important aspect of any investment strategy. When you choose to invest in oil and gas, you’re choosing an instrument quite unlike a standard stock investment.
They say knowledge is power. If you want power and control over your investments, you ought to choose those for which you can gain a solid understanding.
