The American film star Bo Derek is supposed to have claimed that, “Whoever said you can’t buy happiness didn’t know where to shop.” Ms. Derek may be right and she may be wrong, but one thing is certain: the longer you live in a villa Puerto Vallarta, the more places you’ll find to shop, and the more chances you’ll have to make yourself happy spending money there.
And here’s some good news pertaining to the implied relationship between shopping, money and happiness: you don’t need to worry about running out of cash, because Puerto Vallarta has a modern banking establishment just waiting to take care of you. Whether you’re looking for an ATM so you can withdraw $40 for dinner (actually, you’re more likely to get around 540 pesos) or an account specialist to help you open an account, it’s here.
Banking in the city
Let’s start with ATMs. You can find machines throughout the city. Naturally, you’ll be best off if you can find one that is linked to a system mentioned on the back of your card; many local machines are associated with the Cirrus and PLUS systems. Like most machines in the US, they do business in English as well as Spanish; unlike their counterparts in the US, they spit out pesos instead of American dollars.
If you need to visit a bank for some reason, you have access to several different Mexican banking establishments, including Banamex, Bancomer, Banorte, and Santander. All of these banks are open Monday through Friday during regular business hours (9 to 5) and some hours on Saturday. You can count on them to exchange currency, which means they might be the place to go when you want to turn your travelers’ checks (that’s “travellers cheques” for our friends from Canada) into hard cash.
A fool and her money . . .
Any time you’re thinking about taking care of money transactions in an unfamiliar place, you are wise to ask for advice from folks you know and trust. Ask the staff at your villa Puerto Vallarta to recommend a bank you can use where the people are friendly and helpful, and where they will speak English if your Spanish is limited. And of course, when you’re making a withdrawal using an ATM, you need to be cautious no matter where you are. Don’t use that ATM that sits at the end of a long, dark alley and don’t hand your new “best friend” your card and your PIN number.
