Ever wondered how we used to manage the long family road trip before the advent of portable DVD players, game consoles and ipods? Do you run to the nearest roadside 711 for fresh supplies if the batteries run out? How did we ever manage to be entertained on a lengthy car ride without going crazy??
Here are some car games that will keep you and the kids busy, occupied and hopefully entertained on that long distance car trip, with a bit of thought and imagination:
1. I spy with my little eye –a classic travelling game where one person chooses something they can see and says ‘I spy with my little eye, something beginning with…M (or the letter that the item begins with). Whoever guesses correctly takes the next turn. If the kids are too young to understand the alphabet, change letters of the alphabet with colours.
2. Secret words – one child spells out a word one letter at a time on the palm of the other’s hand while the ‘receiver’ is looking away, and they have to guess what the word is.
3. Plate words – pick a random number plate and make up acronyms. Eg BFG-123 could be Big Friendly Giant. Grown ups can play this game too, but remember to keep it clean if the kids are in the back seat!
4. 20 questions – one person picks an item they can see and the rest of the car can ask up to twenty questions to find out what that item is. The person that’s ‘it’ can only answer in ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
5. Find 50 – Have the kids to write a list of 50 things that they’ll see along the way, or see once they reach their destination, and get them to tick off the list along the way with the things they find.
6. Hand games – thumb wrestling or scissors, paper, rock. Rock blunts scissors, scissors cut paper and paper covers stone.
7. The spelling game – depending on the kids age, ask them to spell age appropriate words, and the one that gets 10 correct answers in a row is the winner.
8. Magnetic board games – checkers, snakes and ladders and even chess games can be found in bargain basement shops and can keep the kids busy in the back seat.
9. Car cricket – each person in the car takes turn at being the batter, and makes runs by counting the cars they pass coming toward them from the opposite direction. When the flow of oncoming cars is interrupted by something other than a car, eg truck, van, bus, motorbike, campervan, then that batter is out, and the next person steps up to the wicket. Whoever has the most runs at the end of the game wins!
10. Bus Stop – One player says the alphabet to themselves in their head, and when the other play says ‘bus stop’, use the letter of the alphabet that they up to and find words or names for the following questions that begin with that letter. For example, if the letter picked is G:
Girls name Grace
Boys name Gavin
A colour Grey
A city/town Glasgow
A state Georgia USA
A country Germany
A type of food Grapes
There are heaps of other games out there that will keep you and the kids busy for hours. And if all else fails, you can always talk with each other, or turn up your favourite CD and sing really loud!
