Infertility is a genuine issue in today society. Health issues such as chemotherapy childhood illness, medications and drug abuse, age limitations etc may have caused sterility or inability to produce the healthy sperm necessary for conception. This inability to conceive is causing men to turn to drugs that stimulate sperm production. Gonadotropins are used for men who are experienced infertility issues. These drugs are given via injection. These injections must be taken for four consecutive weeks and can have many negative side effects. Weight gain, hallucinations, high blood pressure, skin changes, and many other symptoms may be experienced. These drugs may or may not be successful in significantly increasing the production of healthy sperm.
Pregnancy that is desired and not achieved can be heart breaking and deeply upsetting to couples. The pressure brought about through side effects induced by fertility medication as well as the stress associated with desire and disappointment cause many to turn to sperm banks for artificial insemination.
Sperm banks can offer information on the donor such as testing to prove that the donor was free of certain diseases such as HIV, HTLV, Syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases, Hepitis B and C, Tay Sach’s, Cystic fibrosis and other hereditary diseases. A chromosome analysis is also completed. Desired characteristics are available to be chosen from such as eye color, hair color, education level, and ethnic origin.
Many men donate sperm as a life style of income. Weekly donations of sperm can be given. The amount given per donation varies. Anonymous donors can receive about 500.00 per sample while open donors can receive as much as 1,000.00 per donation. Payment is often made after the sperm pass a six month collection quarantine period. An open donor gives permission for their personal information to be available to the recipients and to the future child. The criteria for the open donation are much stricter and more regulations must be met. Face to face meetings with the recipients are required. Two such donations are permitted by state in the US. These donations are most common in the states surrounding New York.
The process of donating perm can have a long term effect on the donor. Open donations will one day be answerable to the voice of their future donated sperm created child. Imagine the stress of not knowing when they may call and desire to be included in the donor’s life. The anonymous donor may be fathering a numberless amount of faceless children and wonder if he is daily passing his children in the street. The future impact on our society may be greater than the instant gratification received through immediate financial gain. The changes in the economy and the threat of recession have created a recent increase of sperm and egg donations.
