The news is filled with the stories of In Vitro Fertilization. Multiple births produced through the In Vitro Fertilization process have hit the media with a storm. The IVF process raises many ethical and moral issues as egg and sperm donors are made available with no parental responsibilities. There are also moral concerns when it comes to multiple pregnancies and the selection process in which certain fetuses are removed from the womb so that the others have a greater chance of survival. These are just a few of the issues associated in today’s society by the In Vitro Fertilization process.

IVF is the process of placing previously fertilized eggs in the uterus. This procedure is for women who have healthy eggs but may have damaged internal fallopian tubes. There is also the ability to use donated eggs if necessary. This allows a woman to become pregnant and carry a child rather than adopt. There are many benefits of IVF such as high pregnancy and birth success stories. Close to 200,000 births from IVF has taken place since 1985.

On the down side, in vitro Fertilization is not always successful on the first cycle and can be quite expensive. The cycle may need to be repeated repeatedly. Each cycle can cost around 13,000. Only one out of five women who choose to try IVF actually achieves pregnancy. This can be emotionally devastating to couples who empty their finances and go through these procedures only to face failure. The egg retraction process can also be quite painful and physically challenging. There can be bruising and a needle must be endured. Sometimes surgery is necessary to retract the eggs. The surgery will incur additional cost and physical recovery. The medications and hormone injections necessary in this procedure can also add additional pain.

In vitro fertilization offers much hope but it is not without time and cost. The benefits of holding a darling baby in your arms may far out weigh the cost. However, if the in vitro fertilization proves to be unsuccessful then the journey is not over. Hope that evades and runs from can cause great disappointment and heart ache. It is best to weigh the cost and to get a clear battle plan of choices before putting all your hopes and dreams in this one process. Be prepared to go on after this procedure with the joy of life no matter what they end results.
