With hundreds of nutritional supplements manufactured by various companies in the market, how will you determine which one is the best one for you? Every company advertises its products to be the best for the requirements of your body. Thus determining the right choice for your body can be quite a daunting task. With each new "got to have it" product that comes out, how do we sort through the maze of facts vs. fiction?
Here are some tips that can actually help you separate the beneficial from the non-effective. Prepare a checklist of these tips and you will be able to evaluate a majority of these by yourself. If any of eth chosen supplement does not pass one or more of these, they could be ineffective, overpriced, harmful, or all of the above.
1. Have you balanced your supplement intake with other minerals and vitamins?
Many supplement products do contain minerals like aluminum, arsenic, nickel, tin and toxic fluids like alcohol too. If the level of these minerals will increase in your body, it can cause negative effects. Thus it is important to get the right vitamins and minerals in the right quantity.
2. Is the supplement imbalanced in its quantity of ingredients?
Have you researched the supplements for the vitamins and minerals it contains? Are they in proper balance in relation to each other, or they may not be absorbed and bioavailable; or harmful effects could occur.
3. Do the chosen supplements contain substances that have no proven benefit?
Sometimes the supplement you choose may be high on mineral or vitamin content that is supposed to have fantastic benefits, but is received in enough levels by your body through your food intake. In such cases it won’t help your body much. Moreover many times a "new" ingredient is included that has supposed fantastic benefits, but it is so new that there is no documentation yet that it works. Opting such supplements will at best lead you be waste your money. At worst, you could be causing harm to your body.
We should all remember that supplements are not a replacement for eating the best foods available. It is always recommended to choose and eat the most nutrient-dense foods you like that are available and then take supplements to bridge the gap between your best efforts at eating better and optimal nutrition.
