When you are fortunate enough to experience daily life in Mexico, you are fortunate indeed. And if you’re living in a Puerto Vallarta Vacation Rental overlooking Banderas Bay – jackpot! You are probably having the time of your life, which is precisely why this is not the time to ignore those pearls of wisdom passed on by those who may or may not be older and wiser. Among the more important tidbits to live by: enjoy some breakfast; it’s the most important meal of the day.

Sweet bread, savored al fresco
Boy, howdy, if that isn’t the truth, especially when it comes to breakfast (el desayuno in Spanish) in Puerto Vallarta. In Mexico, the first meal of the day has a distinctive look, whether you’re going for a light, continental style meal or a full spread. You really can’t go wrong either way, and you might want to give both types of meal a try.

The beauty of a Mexican continental breakfast is that you can enjoy it anywhere with very little fuss. It’s not so much what comes with this meal (orange juice, bread and coffee), it’s the quality of those items. Fresh-squeezed orange juice, Mexican pan dulce (sweet bread) and a pot of coffee brewed from organically-grown Mexican beans and maybe blended with a bit of cream and cinnamon. Simplicity makes this meal entirely portable: you can enjoy it on the patio of your Puerto Vallarta Vacation Rental, or you can pack it up in a basket and head for the beach to dine with the fishes.

When you’re really hungry . . .
When you’re in the mood for something a bit more hearty, ask your chef to put together a traditional hot breakfast, Mexican style. You can expect a large plate that includes refried beans, tortillas, eggs, maybe some chorizo (spicy sausage), and yes, orange juice and coffee. If you ask for a cup of hot chocolate, be prepared for something new and delightful; in Puerto Vallarta, you’ll enjoy a special brew of chocolate and spices favored by many locals. And just because it includes more stuff doesn’t mean you can’t picnic with it – tortillas are the perfect way to turn almost any food into finger food.

There is a moral to this story, and it’s this: the person who dances all night until the cows come home runs the risk of missing out on one of Mexico’s secret gems, an early morning meal to die for. If you’re going that route, stay up long enough to grab some breakfast, then go to bed.
