Facelifts are very popular cosmetic facial rejuvenation procedures in which excess facial skin is removed, tightening the appearance of the face. Underlying tissues on the face, and sometimes also the neck, may also be tightened.

During the facelift, an incision will be made in front of the ear. This incision usually heals to be very faint and unnoticeable because it is designed to minimize long-term scarring. Extending upwards into the hairline, it allows the skin to be separated from the rest of the tissue using a scalpel.

First, the tissue beneath the skin may be recontoured, and fat may be removed, particularly from your cheeks. Facial implants can also be added while the surgeon is working on your face. Once this step is complete, the skin is re-draped over the face, and the surgeon removes any excess skin. Then the incision is closed using staples. Head dressing will be required for the first few days after surgery. Your skin will be numb for a few months after the procedure as the nerve endings regrow.

Facelifts usually target the lower area of the face, including the jawline and neck. However, facelifts can also target the forehead and the middle of the face. Midface lifts can help move the cheeks up, and will also improve the deep lines running from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth. A forehead or brow lift can raise the eyebrows and smooth forehead wrinkles.

Usually used to reverse the signs of aging, a facelift can improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. There are many facelift techniques ranging from minimally invasive procedures to extensive face lifts requiring general anesthesia. Although these provide more drastic results, they are obviously not for everyone. Still, they can literally erase years off your face, making patients more comfortable with their appearance.
