Intro - Most professionals are well aware of the work that it takes to make their business successful and the stress that can be produced as a side effect thereof, but sometimes we overlook the fact that we're in control and can take steps to reduce the stress in our lives.

Stress comes in a few different forms; the useful type of stress is in response to some form of excitement or threat and then dissipates when the threat is removed or the excitement is over. Bad stress comes in when the perceived threat doesn't dissipate and the body thinks that it needs to keep physically coping with it.

Long-term or chronic stress keeps the "fight or flight" response triggered in the body which keeps it producing adrenaline and the stress hormone cortisol. Not only are you continuously exposed to these chemicals, but your body will actually sensitize to them in the long run and will suppress your body's ability to fight off illness.

There are mental symptoms that come with chronic stress as well, including: anxiety, eating disorders, depression, substance abuse, mood problems, and memory problems.

The physical effects of long term stress come from your exposure from the combination of adrenaline and cortisol; adrenaline exposure can cause increases in heart rate and blood pressure while prolonged cortisol exposure can cause an increase in blood sugar, digestive and reproductive system problems, speeding up of the aging process, and can contribute to obesity.

There are a few ways to avoid the problems caused by the chronic or long term stress suffered by many professional people: improve your diet, get exercise every day, get enough rest and relaxation, and utilize your support networks.

Many busy people don't take the time to eat well, instead eating a prolific amount of fast food. To help you deal with stress better, cut out the processed foods, high fats and sugars, caffeine, and alcohol. Eat fresh fruits and veggies in a variety of colours everyday!

To help rid your body of stress related chemicals in your system take the time to exercise everyday even if you can only manage a half hour. It's a great outlet for emotional stress, can be meditative, improve your self esteem, provide an outlet for introspection, reduce muscle tension, produces endorphins, help you get a better night's sleep, and can provide you with the opportunity to spend some time alone or with a friend. Exercise is also a great boost for your immune system.

Don't forget to utilize your family and friends for support if you're stressing about things; you may need to learn to manage your time better to fit your new healthy life habits into your schedule, but it's time well invested. The healthier you are, and the less stress you're dealing with, the more effective you can be when you're working. Make sure you take the time to take care of yourself and be positive about life and work; you'll thank yourself in the long run!
