Extension of metro rai;lway service from Tollygunge to Garia Bazar is the latest development of Kolkata. A historic event and a great news for the people of the city, but still not free from controversy. The debate has centered round the naming of the new stations after the legends of Bengal and renaming of Tollygunge as Mahanayak Uttam Kumar. CPI-M, the largest ally of the rulling Left Front government of West Bengal is quite unhappy with the decision of naming metro stations. According to them, the railway minister, rather their supreme rival Mamata Banerjee is making fun of the great souls by naming metro stations after them. But unfortunately they are not getting any taker for their strange logic. There is nothing wrong in naming a place, a road or a station after a renowned personality. Mamata has not done anything extraordinary. It is a very common practice all over the world.

Actually, the reason behind the disappointment of CPIM is elsewhere. They are worried about the rising popularity of Mamata Banerjee. Her popularity was proved in the last Lok Sabha election and the by-elections and by flagging off the metro from Tollygunge to Garia she has owned the heart of all citizens. Even state ministers who belong to other allies of Left Front have appreciated the effort of their rival. But for CPIM appreciating Ms Banerjee’s effort is like accepting defeat to her.

However, not all the points that the rulling party is highlighting on the issue are invalid. Their disappointment over not inviting the chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at the inaugural programme is quite justified. Party, logo and line of politics shouldn’t have been a factor here. After all the chief minister is among the most respectable citizens of the state and his presence on an occasion which is directly related to the development of the state is important. Besides, the state government has borne one-third of the cost of the new project, which is a major contribution. The railway authority or rather the minister shouldn’t have ignored that. Rivalry doesn’t always mean paying back your opponent in its own coins.
Sometimes, good gesture towards the opponent gives more mileage to one. Ms Banerjee will always be remembered by the people of Kolkata for Aug 23. She will surely get a benefit of her efforts, but by taking the decision to ignore the state government and the chief minister, she has made black spots in her clean image. At a time when her opponent is struggling to find way of fighting against her, she has made the fight a little easier. The CPIM has now got issues to blow up in the public which may cause some damage to the political career of the railway minister or TMC supreme, despite her positive effort towards the development of the state.

Naming and renaming of metro stations is not an issue at all. It is just a jacket over the political issue that the CPIM is going to use as a weapon in its campaign against their biggest rival.
