The subject
Dentistry is a branch of medical science which deals with the anatomy, development and the various diseases and disorders of the teeth and gums. To be precise, dentistry deals with oral health and is widely considered to be an impacting part of the overall health. People who study this branch of science can take up the various professions like dentist, dental technician, dental assistant, dental therapist and dental hygienists. Education and licensing
Baltimore College of Dental Surgery was the first school of dentistry that was established in Baltimore, Maryland, USA in 1840. 27 years later, the second school of dentistry was opened which is known as the Harvard Dental School. Studies have revealed that dentists graduating from different dental schools of different countries can have different opinions and decisions on the same clinical conditions. In England, the British Dentists Act of 1878 and Dentists Register act of 1879 ensured that the title of "dental surgeon" and "dentist" could be awarded only to the qualified and registered practitioners. The Dentists Act of 1921 however, fully regulated dentistry in UK.
Eligibility
For one to become a legal dental practitioner, he or she has to graduate with any of the following degrees:
• Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS)
• Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD)
• Bachelor of Dentistry (BDent)
• Bachelor of Dental Science (BDSc)
• Bachelor of Dental Surgery/Chirurgiae (BDS) / (BChD)
In most of the western countries the eligibility criteria that has been set for one to become a qualified dentist is that he or she must usually complete at least 4 years of post graduation. In the European Union however, the duration is at least 5 years for the same.

Apart from general dentistry, 9 dental specialties have been recognized in the US, Canada, and Australia. Specialist courses trains one in the advanced graduate program. Here is a list of the advanced specialist degrees offered by the dental schools:

Masters level:
• MS
• MSc
• MDS
• MSD
• MDSc
• MMSc
• MDent
Doctoral level:
• DClinDent
• DMSc
• PhD
Medical level:
• MD/MBBS specific to Oral Medicine and Maxillofacial Surgery
