For many professionals, especially those that need to be flexible and work non-standard hours during the day, it can be hard to find the time to be with family or even just yourself. There is a difference that not everyone is aware of with how time is utilized; time can be saved, time can be spent, or time can be invested. How you utilize your time depends on what you do with it; you might not realize that many ways that time can be passed is really an investment as well!
There are some pretty basic ways to get yourself more organized to help you have more time to invest in yourself and your family, all of which can improve your quality of life. The first thing you need to do is set priorities for your time and your goals. What parts of your life and day to day living are urgent, important, or neither of those two things?
Next organize the urgent or important goals that you want to achieve and break them up into manageable packets of sub-tasks. Each of these packets is like a building block that when taken all together will build your goal. Set a schedule to complete these packets of tasks to get your goal accomplished within the time frame you want it completed in; make sure that you allow a little extra time in case there are setbacks but reasonably allow yourself enough time to complete the goal without having to lose sleep to get it all done.
Write your schedule of tasks down on a list and fit in other tasks and other packets of time around them. Make sure to schedule time for yourself and your family and be firm about taking time for these aspects of your life. Try to schedule a do-able amount of tasks every day, though as you become more proficient at this kind of organization, this will become second nature.
When you can utilise your work time more efficiently, investing it instead of just spending it for no "return", you will have more time to invest in yourself. Many people don't realize that doing things with your family is time well invested because you can help reduce stress and support your relationship with them. Time invested into your own well being is likewise a good option; time used to exercise or just relax can help you be healthier and happier in all aspects of your life and work.
