Many homes contain alarm systems and smoke detectors in case of a fire in the house. The safety of your home and family is extremely important so it is essential to know the basics to fire safety. This article will let you know how to prevent a fire from happening in your home.

The first and most important step to fire safety is installing a smoke alarm. When you have your smoke detectors installed you need to test them at least once a month. You should make sure they are free of dust and also make sure you change their batteries when needed. Most deaths in a house fire are caused by too much inhalation from smoke.

Let's start with the kitchen. I know we all like to multiple task, but if you are cooking something then you should remain in the kitchen till the cooking is complete or at least have some one take over for you. You should not leave cooking unattended even if you are sure it will be fine. It is better to be safe than sorry. You need to have fire extinguisher in the house, and if you were to keep somewhere then the kitchen would be the best place. But remember to keep it at least ten feet away from the stove. And also keep it on the exit side of the kitchen. This way you won't have to run through to fire to get the extinguisher. Don't put things on or near your stove when cooking. Especially something that can catch on fire easily like curtains or rags. If there is a grease fire, never pour water on it to try to extinguish it. Water will only spread the fire. Don't overload your electrical outlets. This tips goes for anywhere in the house, not just a the kitchen. Overloading the outlets is one of the main ways electrical fires happen.

The kitchen may be the most common places a fire starts but it is not the only place. If you have a portable heater then you should place it somewhere where it won't be tipped over. You should also keep any flammable items away from it such as blankets and clothes. The same is true for any furnace, hot water heater, or space heater. You keep all combustible materials like newspapers and rags away from these objects. And whenever you are using gas for the furnace or a fireplace then remember to strike your match first and then turn on the gas.

There are plenty of tips available to preventing house fires but it really all comes down to common sense. As long as you're not being careless or lazy with flammable and combustible items then you should be fine. But in the case that a mistake happens and there is a fire then make sure you have a proper escape plan for your family. But again, if you use your head then you shouldn't have to use your smoke detector.
