There are many ways to keep your home smelling fresh and clean, so it’s easy to find one that works for you. Personal preferences also come into play, so you should choose a scent that you like — after all, you are the one that lives there!

One of the most popular ways to keep your home smelling nice is to use scented candles. Scented candles usually provide a relatively light smell, and come in almost every scent imaginable, so you have a lot of options when it comes to choosing a fragrance. When choosing a scented candle for your home, you should consider the atmosphere you want to create in the house. If you are just trying to create a fresh, clean, scent, consider smells that come from herbs, such as verbena, or one that comes from an essential oil. For a more vibrant and energetic atmosphere, citrus scents are the way to go. A honey lemon scent gives a clean, but not antiseptic, feel to a home, whereas an orange-based scent will make your home feel lively.

For a home that needs a slightly stronger fragrance, you should consider a home perfume. While candles provide a localized scent, a home fragrance can be sprayed anywhere throughout the house. A particular advantage of home perfumes is that they can be sprayed on fabrics and carpets for a longer lasting smell. It is important to choose a home fragrance that you like, as their smell lasts considerably longer than that of candles. Many people choose more subtle scents for home fragrances for this very reason. Lavender and vanilla are both good choices for a home perfume, as they tend to blend well with other scents and are not overpowering. For something out of the ordinary, try a green tea scent — it is light, like vanilla, but incorporates some herbal notes as well.

If your home is in need of a serious scent makeover, incense may be what you need. It provides a heavy scent that some people find cloying, so consider this before lighting a stick around guests. Because of its strength, incense should generally be used more sparingly than candles or home scent, but even though they can smell strongly while burning, they leave a wonderful after-scent. Some of the best scents for incense are blends like amber or cinnamon orange. Both of these fragrances are interesting without being overpowering.
