With the death of transport and sports minister Subhas Chakraborty, CPIM perhaps lost its most influential mass leader. Throughout his political career, Subhas has been a controversial character. Every time he has opened his mouth, be it in favour of his party’s policies or opposition, he has created controversy. Though in his own words, he never said anything controversial, but only the hard truth that have evoked controversy. Several times in his political party, Subhas has been criticized by his fellow politicians for making controversial statements. Sometimes, his statements have put the party in such uncomfortable situations that they even thought of removing him from the ministry. But above all these, Subhas Chakraborty was among the most dependable man in the party. He was a man who could make everything possible, except bringing back life in a dead body.
He was a master administrator, an organizer and a man full of positive energy who always wished to do something for his state. He was the man behind the success of Hope 86, he was the biggest support behind the development of Yuva Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) and he was that personality, whose request even greatest footballer Diego Maradona could not ignore. Apart from sports, Subhas Chakraborty has proved his organizing ability time and again during party’s rally at the Brigade Parade Ground. Every time there has been a rally at the Brigade, the man with his trademark white Panama hat had come forward to organise the crowd that comprised people, not only from city but from all corners of the state. He had that magical power to make people respond to his call at any time.
Very recently, in a TV show, he had expressed his wish to request his party not to hold any meeting at the Brigade Parade Ground as environmentalists made it a huge issue. He also said things which made his position uncomfortable in the party. After his death on Monday morning, we have several pairs of tearful eyes that belong to them who have taken stand against him in several occasions. But even they couldn’t hold their tears because deep inside they realized what they have lost. Subhas Chakraborty left the party forever at a time when it is literally struggling to regain the faith of people, who have left them.
It was high time for CPIM to get all their supporters together to show their strength to the opposition, but without Subhas, it will surely prove to be an impossible task. Perhaps yesterday was the last day when the CPIM saw such a huge crowd on the streets of Kolkata, which did not only comprise party members and supporters but people irrespective of all political colours, who loved ‘Subhas da’. Yes, certainly CPIM has lost its strongest mass leader, and it will surely feel his absence in a bigger way in the coming days. Despite of being a member of the state committee member for 27 years, Subhas Chakraborty never got the respect and acknowledgement that he deserved, but with his death, he has proved how powerful he was.
