Newly appointed railway minister and West Bengal’s ‘didi’ Mamata Banerjee jas announced the commencement of metro railway service between Tollygunge and Garia from August 28. A good news for the people of Kolkata, no doubt, but for the inhabitants of the area, the story is little bit different. The construction of metro railway extension from Tollygunge-Garia metro has been a reason of harrassment for the local people for the last few years. The only bus route that connects Garia with Tollygunge runs parallel to the metro railway track and as a result during the construction phase, long traffic jams has been a routine matter. Reaching working places and schools within time has been a challenge for the office-goers and students who travel on this route. Monsoon has been the worst time of the year for the inhabitants of the area. Being situated on a slope, majority of streets and roads in the Tollygunge-Garia are get waterlogged during the rainy season. Traffic move very slowly due to lack of space on the roads during the rainy days and for the last few years conditions have been more severe as soils dug for fixing concrete pillars, that are piled on the side of the street have been washed away by rain water and have been making the street muddy, making the movement of the vehicles’ wheels even more difficult.
Another major problem that the people of the area have been facing for the last few years is noise pollution. Huge machineries have been installed in different points on this route for various purposes and when active, these have leads to huge noise in the area. Besides, due to lack of initiative from the railway authority, the construction work has been delayed and as now as the railway minister has virtually announced a deadline for the completion of the project, people are working overnight causing disturbance to the sleep of the local inhabitants.
Undoubtedly, the definition of public transportation in Kolkata will change entirely with the commencement of metro railway in the Tollygunge-Garia route but that will not be able to erase the memories of the bad experience that the local inhabitants are having till today. For them commencement of metro will be a double good news. Firstly, it will make traveling in the city easier for them but more importantly it will put an end to the harassment that they are tolerating for the last few years. They are now eagerly waiting for August 23, the day of relief.
