Three fourths of the population suffers from teeth stains that need immediate attention. Teeth stains start off as light yellow colorations, and go on to become dark brown in color and hard to remove.

There are two types of stains – extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic stains can be found on the surface of the teeth and are largely caused due to tobacco, alcohol and beverages. Stubborn extrinsic stains need to be removed only through bleaching process. But if they are not removed in a timely manner, they penetrate the dentin causing more damage to the teeth.

Intrinsic stains occur on the interior of the teeth. They are generally caused due to aging, stress and exposure to certain kind of minerals like tetracycline or excessive ingestion of fluorides. Cosmetic dentistry is the answer to intrinsic stains, though bleaching can be attempted.

Teeth Whitening Options

1. In-Office whitening – This one is a costly teeth whitening option where one can experience significant color change in a very short period of time. Dentists apply high concentration of peroxide gel for 15 -20 minutes, up to an hour. Stubborn stains need more hours of sitting, which cannot be done on the same day.

2. Whitening Kits – These kits use lower concentration of peroxide gel and are applied for an hour or so, on the teeth. Bleaching trays similar to mouth guards are used to whiten the teeth. They are comparatively cheaper than the in-office whitening procedure.

3. Teeth Whitening Lozenges – They are the easiest and simplest teeth whitening products that currently available in the market. They need no special application and they can be used for teeth whitening anytime. They contain safe ingredients like Ethyl Cellulose Polymer, Peppermint Oil and Carbamide Peroxide. These lozenges need to be taken continuously for 18 days (2 per day) to completely remove the stains.

Overall, regular use of oral hygiene products and good eating habits can prevent teeth stains from forming.
