Sam Querrey, a 21-year-old American now ranked at No. 26 in the world, obtained his second ATP title after beating the Australian Carsten Ball with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the LA Tennis Open. The LA Open was Querrey’s third final in three weeks, but the American was unable to garner a victory until this last tournament. A runner-up at Newport and Indianapolis, Querrey lost against Rajeev Ram and Robby Ginepri, respectively.

Before Querry and Ball were matched against each other, Querrey defeated Tommy Haas, while Ball beat the Argentine Leonardo Mayer.

Once engaged in the final, both Querrey and Ball began with strong, aggressive play. Querrey, however, managed to break Ball’s service twice, winning the first set 6-4. In the second set, Ball’s fortunes changed; he began pressuring the American with his strong forehand shots and his difficult left-handed serve. Ball was able to win the second set, evening out the match.

During the third set, Querrey recovered from the loss, making numerous first serves while putting pressure on Ball’s serves. In spite of Ball’s efforts, Querrey took the victory in the final set with a score of 6-1, a win that also gave him the match.

At the end of the match, Ball said that he was disappointed about his loss, but was nonetheless grateful for having a “good week.” The LA Open gave the Australian-born player an opportunity to enter his first ATP level tournament final, as well as his first win in a match on tour.

“Carsten had an unbelievable week,” Querrey said. The winner said that, although Ball put up a good fight, he felt confident in his game and emphasized how happy he was to win his second title of the year.

“It feels great. After losing two finals there was no way I wanted to lose a third. I was worried after the second set. He was putting pressure on me. I was mad at myself. I started thinking about the other finals. But during the changeover I collected myself. I lifted my first-serve percentage in the third set; that was the key. I was able to keep it all together,” Querrey said.

Querrey also said that his fan club, “the Samurais,” – a group of old high school friends – offered a great deal of support and helped bolster his confidence. Haas complained about the rowdy group, but Querrey backed his friends.

“They are fine. They clap for people when they hit good shots. They are not out of control.”

With his new title, Querrey is confident that he will enter the top 32 to play at the US Open, held on August 31st. Prior to the big event, though, Querrey will be playing at the Washington, D.C., Montreal, and Cincinnati tournaments, where he can expect greater challenges, as he will be playing some of the best in the top 20.
