If you’re like most students in college or in university, you dread the period when exams come up. You remember the late nights spent cramming and the panic you have felt in other years when you realized you wouldn’t have time to read all your study materials even once. Each year you promise yourself that this time you’re going to do it differently. This time you’re going to start studying earlier, and you’re going to study often.

What happens? All too often, life gets in the way. Let’s face it, those years when you are a student in school can also be the most exciting and confusing times of your life. So many things are competing for your attention all at the same time. Who has time to study?

If you want to succeed in university or in college, you will have to remind yourself why you are there. Your brain likes to remember information that is interesting, and it tends to ignore information that seems boring. That means that when you are studying, you have a better chance of remembering what you are learning if you tell yourself that you are very fascinated by the topic. Train yourself to get excited about what you are learning. Decide you’re going to enjoy learning for its own sake.

It’s easier to remember important facts and concepts for exams when you have a deep understanding of the topic. Waiting until the night before to study something gives you very little chance to actually understand the material. If you wait until the last minute, you may find that you don’t understand any of the topic you are studying, but it will be too late to ask anyone to help you. Create a schedule to spread your learning over the entire semester.

Taking notes the traditional way doesn’t work well for everyone. It’s often easier to remember material when you take notes using the mind-mapping method. Many people can understand and remember complex material better when they use the mindmapping process to take notes. Why not try it for yourself?

Don’t wait until the night before to start studying. Your brain needs time to move any new information it has acquired into permanent storage. Your brain likes to use the hours when you are sleeping to accomplish this information processing, so if you cut back on sleep like many university students do, you’ll cut back on the you’re your brain has to process your new information.
