How many times have you looked out the window and thought about how you can’t make out individual branches on trees, or signs in the distance? Did you just accept that you couldn’t see very far? If so, then you may be suffering for no reason at all. You may be surprised to learn that most people can see well at distances, and you should be no exception. More than likely, you are nearsighted, or rather, you have myopia. While you may not have heard the word myopia very much, almost everyone has heard the terms nearsightedness or farsightedness in their lifetimes.

This condition occurs when the cornea of the eye has too much of a curvature, or the actual eyeball is too long. This causes the eye to be unable to focus correctly, and as a result, objects in the distance appear blurry. This condition normally begins showing itself early in childhood, and will progress until on or around the age of 20. However, it can still appear at any time during adulthood, and in that situation, it is most often caused by heath conditions such as diabetes and visual stress.

If you have problems seeing at a distance, then it is of the utmost importance that you schedule an exam with your family eye doctor, as there are several treatments that are available to help you see better. In most cases, vision can be corrected simply by the help of prescription eyeglasses or disposable contact lenses.

There is also a method known as orthokeratology, which is also known as corneal refractive therapy. This therapy involves the patient wearing a series of specially designed hard contact lenses that work to gradually reshape the curvature of the cornea, changing how light enters and is focused. In some cases, adult patients are even given laser surgery to correct myopia, which is normally known as LASIK eye surgery.
