Random Drug Testing is the most common and effective drug testing method. It is inexpensive and provides results instantly. In Random Drug Testing method, drug tests are conducted on people who are picked randomly from a group. This is practiced by many businesses, schools, sports events and federal departments to deter drug abuse.

Businesses:
There are a vast number of drug abusers employed. National Institute of Drug Abuse states that, 74% of the 12 million drug abusers are employed in America. Among them, nearly 23% use illegal drugs at work place. Drug abusers can cost billions of dollars each year to a company due to health problems, injuries and less productive hours. In order to prevent this, many businesses opt for Random Drug Tests. Random Drug Tests deter drug abuse and help to improve productivity of the organisation as a whole by avoiding workplace accidents and loss due to unproductive working hours of the drug abused employee.

Schools:
Young people are more vulnerable to drugs. Many schools are using Random Drug Tests as one of the important methods to prevent drug abuse and address the youth about its consequences. Random Drug Test deters and prevents drug abuse at an early age by providing awareness about the side effects of the abuse.

Sports Events:
The Random Drug Testing method is used by many sports entities to provide equal and fair treatment of all participants in the game. These tests are conducted on the participants including players, coaches and trainers. A perfectly organized Random Drug Test is a good deterrent to drug abuse by athletes.

Federal Departments:
US Department of Transportation has mandated Random Drug Testing. Many departments including Air Resources Board, military, police, motor vehicles, general services etc., conduct Random Drug Tests. According to department of transportation, Random Drug Testing Rate in 2009 was 25% for Federal Aviation Administration, 50% for Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and 50% for United States Coast Guard.

The goal of Random drug Testing is to deter and stop drug abuse. It encourages students, employees, and government employees to say ‘NO’ to drugs. Hence people, businesses, NGOs, sports authorities, and federal departments should actively take part in creating an environment that supports Random Drug Tests and help to stop drug abuse.
