Of all the healing arts, techniques, and remedies, the body massage is probably the oldest form of curative since the dawn of man. It is evident that the massage was first developed due to instinct. Think about it, whenever you get hurt, you rub yourself instinctively in that area to relax the muscles and attempt to relieve the pain. This is how the science and art of body massages first came to be.

The Human Touch

The human touch is absolutely vital to a person’s social needs. Statistics express that children who’ve been deprived of the loving touch of their parents or guardians while growing up, often develop mental, physical, and emotional problems. It’s no wonder then that the massage is very relaxing and causes people to come back to a masseuse just to experience a soothing touch as well as a pain relieving therapy. In lovers, it is also because of pure instinct that both try to explore each other’s bodies in a purely giving manner through touching, kneading, rubbing and fondling.

A Form of Communication

Nobody can deny that body massages oftentimes fulfill deep human needs of being loved and cared. It is a way of relieving the body from emotional and physical stress. Tense and tired bodies can be relaxed and recuperated through a good massage. It is a form of communication and it falls directly on the estimated statistics of anthropologists who say that 90 percent of a normal human being’s everyday communication is basically non-verbal. Some of these non-verbal communications are; facial expressions, body stance, and body distance. However, none of them are more communicative than the human touch, especially when it’s a massage.

The Scientific View

In the scientific perspective, a massage is done by applying a kneading and rubbing manner to the muscles. The hands are pressed to the body in an effort to refresh and relax the tired body. Here are some more specifics:

• A massage works through the stimulation of the nerve endings in the skin’s superficial layers.

• It increases the circulation of blood in the capillaries.

• It improves deep circulation of the lymph (improves lymphatic drainage).

• It also increases deep circulation of the blood’s overall flow.

• It stimulates the production of endorphins (the natural opiates of the brain).

• It lowers the heart rate and pulse rate.

• It’s used to relieve or reduce overall stress.

• It improves muscle tone.

• It’s used to treat some sports injuries and other repetitive strain injuries.

• It relieves pain in certain specific areas.

• In some countries, it’s used as an effective form of treatment for various ailments such as arthritis and even with some septic conditions.

• It detoxifies the body.

• Some countries also use it to treat emotional disorders.

• It builds self confidence (this may or not be caused by the endorphins).

• It gives pleasure.

It’s important to know that body massage therapy has some contraindications. This means that it’s sometimes inadvisable for people to undergo massage therapy due to specific health concerns. Examples like skin rashes, fever, swelling, inflammation, varicose veins, etc, are some of the reasons why you should check with your therapist first before getting a body massage.
