Building surveyors provide professional advice on all aspects of property and construction.
They work on site with new buildings and are concerned with the aftercare and performance of existing buildings.
This is a very wide field and may include advising on various aspects of buildings at different stages, including tasks like design, maintenance, repair, dilapidations, refurbishment, restoration and sustainability.

The nature of the work may range from the design of large, multimillion-pound structures to modest adaptations and repairs, and sometimes includes working with buildings of architectural or historic importance.
The demand for the building surveyor's expertise is growing with the increasing refurbishment of urban areas, rural sites and older properties. The largest employer is the private sector, which ranges from very small practices to large companies with overseas operations.

Local authorities also employ a number of building surveyors, as do major companies with a large amount of property, such as major retailers or hotel chains. There are also opportunities to work for the trusts or charities that manage large historical buildings and are concerned with their maintenance.
To become a chartered building surveyor one of the best routes would be to do a Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accredited degree then look for a position with a firm of building surveyors. You can then take the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) and become a chartered building surveyor. Companies will employ you with a degree that is not related to surveying but to become chartered you will have to study a RICS course.

There is also the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust, a registered charity that offers support to individuals who due to financial, social or academic reasons would not usually have the chance to consider a career in surveying. They can help get you into employment, via NVQ or degree qualifications to get you trained.

Alongside professional skills and qualifications, communication skills, and the ability to present with confidence to clients are also important. For those who are highly motivated with a desire to succeed, career progression potential is excellent for those who have the drive coupled with experience and a proven track record.
Building Surveyor jobs also offer the chance to meet with many different kinds of people from contractors to architects as well as senior management representatives across a wide range of organisations. A building surveyor job would definitely offer you scope to get out and about and build relationships and a valuable network of contacts.
Qualifications are also widely recognised in many countries if you wanted to work abroad, therefore offering scope to travel with your job too.

Surveying is generally a well paid profession. Surveyors can command high salaries and bonuses once they are fully qualified. Surveyors in the UK are amongst the highest paid graduates and there are some great routes to building surveyor jobs via graduate and apprentice schemes.
