Thanks to advances in dental technology, teeth whitening is available to the masses. There are a variety of ways that you can have your teeth whitened. Some choose to do their complete treatment in the comfort of their own home, using over-the-counter products that are designed to help make teeth whiter, while others choose to get their teeth whitened professionally.

The process of professionally whitening teeth utilizes the technology of a laser. To begin with, the dentist will make sure that the teeth are cleaned by doing a minor cleaning and removal of any plaque that has built up along the gum line. After that, a peroxide-based gel is placed on the teeth. This method is similar to the formula that is in many over-the-counter products especially designed for this purpose, except that the formulation is much stronger.

A light is then used to activate the chemicals that are in the gel. The light is placed over the teeth, thanks to a special mold, and the patient relaxes in the dental chair during the treatment process. It can take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour, but the results are easy to see immediately. A teeth whitening procedure can whiten teeth up to 10 shades brighter, making an immediate impact on the way the patient looks and feels. Deep rooted stains may take a second or third visit to achieve maximum whitening effects.

There are even sensitive teeth whitening programs that exist. These specialized processes are designed for those whose sensitive teeth can’t take having the gel put on their teeth for an extended amount of time or repetitively. The gel is used only once and it is a much gentler formulation, minimizing any sensitivity issues. Having your teeth whitened is a rapidly expanding part of the cosmetic dentistry industry, and it is swiftly becoming a very popular concept.
