Wireless Networks, as the term indicates is a set of networks that work without the use of any wires. Wireless Networks are basically used for communication purposes, over wireless voice networks like mobiles and telephone networks. For example CPDP (Cellular Digital Packet Data), HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data), PDC-P (Packet Data Cellular) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service).

Some other wireless networks work on its own physical networks from large antenna devices mounted on the towers like LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution Service) and MMDS (Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service). Bluetooth is another technology that works only on small devices over short distances.

Wireless Networks usually run over other wireless networks and utilize the lower layer networks for security and encryption. On the contrary, Stand alone wireless networks either have their own security and encryption features or rely on the Virtual Private Networks (VPN’s) for the same. In rare cases, multiple layers are used for security and encryption. There are some wireless networks that are fixed that is their antennas do not move frequently, whereas some are mobile and can easily move and work while changing the direction of the antennas. Wireless Networks operate on licensed or unlicensed ranges of the frequency spectrums.

Wireless Networks can be further categorized into two types, the Wide Area Network (WAN) and the Local Area Network (LAN). Wide Area Networks include the networks used for communication purposes like used by various telecom companies for mobiles. These make use of the modern technologies like GSM /GPRS. On the other, Wireless Local Area Networks provide wireless connectivity within a limited area. It has its application in high data transfer rate commonly used in hospitals and industries. It makes use of the latest technology like WiFi.

Wireless Networks have an advantage over the other networks that makes it most commonly used. Some of its features like convenience to use, mobility of use, productivity of work, ease in deployment and its cheap cost make it rank outstanding among other networks.
