STEP ONE. Make sure you understand the basic terminology used in travel insurance. Once you know the difference between ‘single trip cover’ and ‘annual cover’, ‘backpacker insurance’ and ‘winter sports cover’, you can start to make a more informed decision based on your needs.

STEP TWO. Once you are familiar with the key terms, it’s time for you to consider your own requirements. Define what sort of traveller you are, consider where you’ll be travelling to, and any risks you might encounter. Be sure not to forget this step, as above all else it will ensure you get the best policy for you.

STEP THREE. You also need to be familiar with the more complicated terminology that you will find in your policy. This is the best way to avoid being tripped up by anything in your contract: if you understand what you’re signing up for, then you don’t have to worry about the small print.

STEP FOUR. Do some investigation amongst your nearest and dearest, finding out why they chose their policies. Do remember, of course, that every traveller has specific needs and requirements for their holiday, so you can’t rely entirely on the advice of others. However, this can be an easy way to begin your search.

STEP FIVE. These days, it seems like everywhere you go you’ll always come across adverts for price comparison sites. Though the adverts are generally quite annoying, comparison sites can actually be very helpful in letting you view the pros and cons of different policies side by side. Don’t be tempted to rely on them completely, but do have a look at them to see if they can answer any questions your research has opened up.

STEP SIX. Never underestimate the importance of research. Whilst advice from friends, family and comparison sites can seem very helpful, it is ultimately down to you to get the top deal out there for your trip. Research may feel a bit arduous at the beginning, but you’ll be thankful of it should you need to make a claim on your policy after your holiday.

In the end, it’s really quite simple to sort out your travel insurance policy. To get the best deal possible you will have to put in a bit of time and effort, but at least then you relax, certain that your holiday is in safe hands.
