As the costs of fuel increases, most of us are havng to cope with rising heating bills. As a result, it is worth thinking about how to keep your energy bills as low as possible.

Different people have different priorities when deciding how to heat their homes. Here is some information that may be of use when deciding on the best kind of heating for you.

In the UK, the three most popular kinds of fuel for central heating are gas, electricity, and oil. Make sure your home is properly insulated to get the most out of of whichever sort of heating you have.

Gas is the most popular central heating fuel. Gas is generally cheaper than electricity or oil, and unlike oil which has to be delivered, gas is pumped through pipelines. This ensures your home always has a constant supply of fuel.

Oil heating is often used where gas is not available. Oil fuelled combination boilers are very efficient, but you do need to keep an eye on the level of oil in your tank to avoid running out. Tanks are not very attractive, but you can get an underground, double lined tank which is very unlikely to leak.

Electric heating is the cheapest type of to install, and is another efficient way to heat your home. Electric heaters are 100% efficient at the point of use, which means that all electricity used is turned to heat, with no wastage. Electrical heating is the ideal option for anyone fortunate enough to have solar panels or a wind turbine, and as these technologies become more affordable, electrical heating may become more widespread.

Electric heaters can also be installed virtually anywhere in the home, unlike gas and oil powered central heating which requires a costly boiler and network of radiators and pipes. Electric heating gives homeowners more freedom with the layout of their homes. However, although electrical heating is realtively cheap to install you may find it costs more to run than gas or oil powered central heating.

There are a lots of different companies who could supply your gas, electricity or oil so shop around to make sure you get the best deal. You could pay less for gas and electricity prices if you take a dual fuel option from one supplier, such as the dual fuel rates from British Gas. By buying both your electricity and gas from the same company you may well save money on energy.
