There are two classifications of hair removal for women, epilation and depilation. Epilation refers to the process of removing hairs from the root, while depilation refers to the removal of hair to skin level. Epilation methods include plucking with tweezers, waxing, sugaring, laser hair removal, electrolysis, and threading. Depilation methods include shaving and chemical depilatories; both of these methods eliminate hair only above the surface of the skin.
Shaving
Shaving is currently the primary method of hair removal for more than 90 percent of American women. Shaving became popular among women of all ages following the introduction of the first disposable blade razor created especially for women, Gilette’s “Milady Décolletée”. The first electric razor designed for women was introduced in the 1930s by Remington and the first completely disposable razor marketed to women became available in the 1970s.
Depilatory Creams
Depilatory lotions are creams have become less and less popular as more effective hair removal systems have entered the market, but depilation is still widely practiced among women in Middle Eastern cultures. Depilatory creams remove hair at the skin level by dissolving the protein structure of the hair and weakening the hair to the point that it can be wiped off with a rag.
Waxing
Waxing as a hair removal method evolved from the ancient method of sugaring. Sugaring is still practiced by women throughout Egypt and the Middle East. The treatment involves smearing a warm paste made of sugar and other ingredients onto the skin, then applying cotton strips to the skin and removing the strips (along with the hair attached to the strips). Waxing offers a modern alternative to sugaring; however, many women still prefer sugaring because the paste adheres only to the unwanted hair, not the skin, and since the sugaring paste is made of natural substances it is easier to wash off than wax.
Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is one of the most popular and effective hair removal methods used today. During a laser hair removal session, a laser is guided over the skin while a technician delivers pulses of light energy to areas of the body with unwanted hair. The laser targets the melanin in the root of each individual hair, disabling the follicle and eliminating hair in the active growth phase. Laser treatment is most effective on light skinned patients with dark hair, but laser technology has advanced to the point that patients with all skin types can benefit from treatment.
