In today’s society there is a lot more emphasis on preventative medicine. The focus is on maintaining your health rather than treating an ailment or disease after the fact. Not only is it more cost effective, it helps reduce the incidences of even minor colds and flu. A big part of preventative medicine involves natural herbs.

Olive leaf tea is a natural herbal recipe that is used to maintain health. Olive leaf is a caffeine free organic antioxidant that has been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, and improve skin health and respiratory response. It can also increase energy and enhance the immune system. This is just one of the many herbal supplements on the market that is targeted towards improving and maintaining health. Many people feel herbal supplements are safe because they are natural. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.

Herbs are comprised of hundreds of different components, not all of which are safe. Some may interact poorly with certain pharmaceutical drugs that you may be taking, while other components may have a more direct ill effect on your system. It is important to keep in mind that the United States does not have a regulatory system set up for herbal supplements. That is why it is very important that you research any herbal supplement you are thinking of taking. Since the FDA is not involved in the process of regulating herbs, you need to make sure you read more than the label. Anyone is able to buy herbal supplements over the counter without a prescription, and oftentimes they are unaware of what they are actually buying and putting into their systems. There is a large market for supplemental health; however, the consumer needs to be aware of what they buying and for what purpose.

More than a hundred and eighty deaths have been linked to dietary supplements over the past few years. Not to mention the people who have suffered from kidney, heart, and muscle problems. People assume that the herbal supplements have no ill side effects because they are natural. More and more people are turning towards herbal supplements to stay healthy and treat health problems to avoid having to go the pharmaceutical route. Not all supplements cause problems and in fact many of them can be very helpful in treating a multitude of disorders. However, before taking any over the counter medicine, including an herbal supplement, it may be a wise idea to check with your physician or pharmacist on possible side effects or interactions.
