Filing taxes on time is what responsible citizens do. However, in the US, tax payers who pay more than the actual tax liability are entitled to IRS refunds.

Tax refunds are monitored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), a federal government agency. A person who wants a return of the surplus amount paid by him has to file for a return claim. This process can be fairly cumbersome as it is followed by thorough verification by IRS agents. They decide on the genuinity of the claim. If the claimant proves that he has paid an excessive tax amount, then he receives a refund.

What Happens When the IRS Refund Amount Differs from One’s Expectation?
The IRS refund amount is either less or more than what one tends to expect. You can always wait before you encash it. Wait for a notice that explains the difference and follow the instructions mentioned on it.

If the IRS refunds are less than your expectation, you can encash the check. However, you have the right to seek an explanation for that amount. If you do not receive a notice explaining the amount, you can call 800-829-1040. Visiting the IRS website at irs.gov may also be a good option to consider. If it is established that IRS owes you some refund, you will receive a check which will cover the difference.

Can One Check The Status Of The IRS Refund?
Yes, it is possible to check the status and amount of the IRS refunds in the following ways:

• Through Internet: This is the quickest and the simplest method of checking the status of the current year’s IRS refunds. Just log on to irs.gov and click on “where’s my refund?” link. The IRS site will ask for your social security number, filing status and exact whole dollar refund that appears on your return.
• Through phone: The number for IRS hotline is 800-829–1954. You can make a call on this number to verify the IRS refund amount. Here too, one has to give the same details.

Note that IRS refunds are subject to US tax codes. Keeping a track of all the laws may prove to be a cumbersome task. However, a professional will definitely have up-to-date understanding of the laws. So, visit I want a refund for more information.
