There will always be strange laws on the books wherever you go, and that is certainly true of The Garden State, New Jersey. You always wonder why these kinds of laws are on the books, whether they involve odd car laws, things you can and cannot do on Sundays, and just laws concerning general decorum. Below, while by no means a complete list of the weird laws in the state, is just a sampling of the bizarre laws in the state of New Jersey.

There are a few perplexing car statutes in New Jersey. For once, it is required that drivers must warn other motorists beforehand if they intend to pass a person on the freeway. This warning extends to other vehicles as well. Motorists must honk before they pass another car, skater, skateboarder, or person on a bicycle. However, even if they provide sufficient warning, automobiles may not pass horse-drawn carriages.

While committing murder in New Jersey, let it be known that it is illegal to wear a bulletproof vest while doing so.

In New Jersey, apparently you are actually not allowed to pump your own gas, which must be a boon to the full-serve industry.

Want to make a sweater during fishing season? Tough breaks if you’re a man. For some reason it’s illegal for men to knit during fishing season.

Be sure not to show the fuzz too much sass. In New Jersey, it’s illegal to frown at the police.

Be polite in The Garden State. You are not permitted to slurp your soup.

It’s akin to tampering with mail perhaps, but it is illegal to detain or impede the journey of a homing pigeon.

Somewhat related, in Cresskill, New Jersey, they look out for their birds. Cats are required to wear three bells in order to warn birds of their whereabouts.

Try to be cordial but not too friendly at the zoo in Manville, New Jersey. Remember that it is against the law to offer the animals cigarettes or whiskey.

So much for soup in Sea Isle City. You can’t boil bones there.

We close with some pickle laws in Trenton, New Jersey, where you cannot eat pickles on Sunday and you may not throw a bad pickle on the street.
