About one fourth of the population is affected with a common vision problem called hyperopia or farsightedness. For those who have hyperopia they see objects at a distance very well, but when it comes to doing something up close, such as reading, they can not see well enough.

For those with hyperopia or farsightedness they can get headaches or experience eyestrain or even fatigued when doing close work. If you are farsighted and you are experiencing these symptoms, chances are your eyes have changed and you are in need of a new prescription.

On a person who is farsighted, when the ray of light enters their eye the focus will be behind the retina instead of directly on it. The eyeball of a farsighted person is shorter than it should be.

Children can be born with farsightedness and outgrow it. This is because the eyeball will lengthen as the child grows.

Many people can confuse hyperopia with presbyopia because they are both vision problems with involving the inability to see well up close, however there are two different reasons for the cause of the vision problem.

For those who are farsighted your prescription will begin with a plus, unlike myopia whose prescription begins with a negative.

Farsighted can be easily corrected with glasses or contact lenses. The glasses or contact lenses will change the way the light rays bend into the eye. You may need to wear your glasses all the time or you may only need to wear them when you are going to do close work, such as reading.

There are several different refractive surgical procedures that will correct farsightedness.

If you opt for one of the surgical procedures, the two most common procedures are the PRK and LASIK.

If you opt for the PRK the laser will reshape the cornea in order to make it steeper, which will allow the light rays to focus on the retina instead of behind it as it does now.

If you opt for the LASIK, the laser will make a flap in the cornea and fold it back, so the laser can reshape the cornea to make it steeper. This will allow the light rays to hit directly on the retina instead of behind the retina as it does now.

Laser surgical procedures can eliminate or reduce the need of eyeglasses or contact lenses. Check with your eye doctor to see which one is best suited for your eyes. There may be other options for you not listed here.
