One of the most common questions I get from our shoppers is “how can I get a better smoke?” Hookahs come in all shapes, sizes, and flavors and the hookah you’re smoking out of can very well influence the quality of your smoke.
The Egyptian Hookahs, Turkish Hookahs, Syrian Hookahs, and Lebanese Hookahs are usually large and have impressive engravings on the stems and well decorated bases. These pieces are truly works of art and the size (some believe) provides a great quality of smoke. The entry level hookah smoker may not be inclined to spend the two hundred dollars on such works of art so the modern hookahs which usually come from China are becoming more popular.
The Modern Hookahs are the most recent step in hookah evolution. They are easy to clean, convenient to travel with, and the smoke quality is matched with that of the larger hookahs. Modern hookahs also come with a price tag of thirty to sixty dollars.
So you have your hookah, large or small, and it tastes great! But you want a little more, right? Ok, here are a few tips.
The great thing about smoking a hookah is that it is a clean, smooth, smoke unlike that of a cigarette. Therefore, making the smoke smoother will improve your smoking experience. The easiest way to have smoother hookah smoke is to cool it down. To do this, fill up your base with about half as much water as you usually do. Then, place ice cubes in the base until the waterline reaches the normal level which is usually up to the point where the round part of the base curves into the neck.
With the smoke now getting chilled before you inhale it, you will notice an incredible increase in smooth hookah smoke. Staying inline with the “chilling” tips, lets cool down the hookah shaft.
You will need to purchase an ice pot to cool the shaft. Currently we only sell ice pots for modern hookahs but you may be able to find one for an Egyptian Hookah or Syrian hookah from another seller. You can find (in our store and others) Egyptian hookahs and Syrian Hookahs that have an ice pot built onto the shaft which is a great feature.
The ice pot slides down over the hookah shaft from the top. You fill it with ice then slide your ash tray on top of it and your tobacco bowl on the top of the shaft. This cools the smoke down as it goes down the shaft of the hookah. Doing this with a combination of ice in the base and you will never smoke warm hookah again.
The controversial smoking of alcohol is becoming more popular. Before you go out and buy cheap Rum to pour in your base, you need to know a few things. First, you are at risk for severe health issues when smoking alcohol. Second, you should consult your doctor to understand these risks prior to trying it. And third, you should exercise the same caution after smoking alcohol as you do when you drink it. That means simply, do not drive.
The smartest way to give your hookah a kick is to use a small modern hookah. Otherwise, you are going to feel silly after pouring a full bottle of liquor in a large Egyptian hookah or Syrian hookah. Do not ever, ever, ever, smoke pure liquor in the base. Your lungs, brain, and throat will not allow you do this for more than a minute. You should always dilute the alcoholic contents by 30-50% with water. This will give you the flavor in a way that your body will more easily accept. Because of the dangers associated with this, you should not smoke with an alcoholic beverage for more than thirty minutes. If at anytime you should feel uneasy or ill, discontinue immediately.
Using a couple of these techniques will certainly improve your hookah smoking experience. Regardless of the quality of smoke, remember that hookahs always taste better when smoked with others.
