Cold sore is a contagious disease. It is mainly caused by the herpes simplex virus. The Herpes simplex virus remains hidden inside the nerve cells of the body. Sores can flare up when exposed to sunlight, so try to cover your body completely before going outside. You can apply sunscreen with high SPF to avoid dangerous impact of scorching heat. Lemon balm, Vitamin C and Lysine supplements are some complimentary medicines to treat cold sores. However, before taking any medicine, it is better to consult a trained physician and take his/her advice.

Several cold sores treatments can be availed right at home. Use a pinch of salt to the infected part to ease your pain. Salt helps in speedy drying-up of sores and restricts outbreaks of herpes. Intake of garlic is also found to have positive impact on cold sores.
