This surgery restricts the size of the stomach and reconstructs the intestines so food will be digested differently. The purpose is to do two things. First, the person will not be able to eat as much food because their stomach will be much smaller. Then, whenever they do eat, their food is digested differently so a lot of the calories will be passed through the body so the person does not gain as much weight as they normally would through the foods that they eat..

Typically, this type of surgery is performed by first stapling off a large part of the stomach in order to create a pouch that the food will go to. Then, once the food enters that pouch, it travels to the lower part of the jejunum. This allows for lower amounts of calories to be absorbed by the body, thus allowing for weight loss.

This is the most popular procedure, but that does not mean it is without risk. Because food goes straight to the lower part of the jejunum, vitamins do as well. Iron and calcium levels have to be checked because it is easy to develop a deficiency after undergoing this surgery.

Malnutrition can also occur, so many patients keep regular appointments with their doctors in order to ensure that they are healthy. They can also then make adjustments as ordered by their doctors.

Patients can see great results with this surgery. Patients who stick to the plan and work hard can see tremendous weight loss. It is important for patients to understand the risks and benefits so they can make an informed decision in regards to their choice of weight loss surgery.
